Book Reviews

Starting your Own Business in South Africa
Authors: Guy Macleod and Barry Terblanche
Indicative price: R 179.00

This is an excellent book to support an entrepreneur, filled with practical information that is directly relevant to the South African situation, written by South Africans. It is easy reading and provides a great deal of insight into the most important considerations when planning and starting a business, presented in an accessible format. I have found it a very useful, comprehensive resource and the current 10th edition is sufficiently up to date.

Chapters cover the key elements of a business plan and then practical information and advice on implementing your plan, such as structuring the business, tax and legal issues as well as ongoing management of finance and staff.

From Edison to iPod
Authors: Frederick Mostert and Don MacRobert
Indicative price: R 194.00

This is a great resource, written for a South African audience, providing information on all the different forms of Intellectual Property rights in a great, user-friendly format.

It is useful for entrepreneurs particularly as it covers all the different aspects of IP protection that need to be considered when starting a business such as: Trade Marks; Copyright; Design Rights; Trade Secrets and Patents. There are some great examples that one will readily identify with, especially in the design and logos / trademarks sections

Who knew that Jamie Lee Curtis was granted a US patent for a nappy that has a moisture-proof pocket that can hold clean-up wipes?

There are some useful sample contracts and agreements -although RCIPS provide these when commercialising UCT IP

Courses

UNISA Programme in Financial Management

A really useful course for entrepreneurs without a business background, e.g. a science or engineering degree, is the Programme in Financial Management which is offered by UNISA via correspondence over a year. The modular course will provide you with a good introduction to financial management, financing and investment decisions (which will provide you with the tools you need to critically evaluate capital equipment purchases), as well as how to manage your working capital - something that can lead to potentially great companies failing due to cashflow constraints. There are additional optional modules on risk management or tax planning.
