26 Mar 2014 - 15:00

The Western Cape Government’s 110% Green Initiative has recently launched The Better Living Challenge, a competition to gather and showcase the best, most innovative, affordable and green home improvement solutions for low-income living. The Challenge is part of Cape Town World Design Capital 2014.

Anyone with a new concept or an existing product innovation to improve homes can enter the competition, including professionals, students, designers, engineers and companies.  Teams, including student-supervisor teams, are welcome to enter.  There are three core entry categories:

  • Structural Home:  affordable and sustainable products, materials and systems to construct homes
  • Comfortable Home:  products, services and systems to help create comfortable internal environments
  • Connected Home:  products, services and systems to connect a home to its surroundings (physically and/or digitally)

Students not in their final year of study compete to win a R40 000 cash prize.  Students that are in their final year of study or professionals/companies stand a chance of winning support packages to the value of R500 000.  These packages will aid commercialisation of the winning concept.  Opportunities will be given for entrants to gather public and user input.

Interested individuals are invited to register for entry online. Applications are accepted until 31 May 2014. Finalists will be invited to exhibit at the public Showcase running from October to December 2014 and the winners will be announced in December.

UCT students or employees are advised to contact Philip Hoekstra prior to submitting their applications to ensure intellectual property is protected. Interested individuals can also contact Fran Cox, the project manager.
