RCIPS to celebrate World Intellectual Property Day with exciting events on campus
World Intellectual Property (IP) Day is celebrated every year on April 26 in order to promote discussion of the role of IP in encouraging innovation and creativity. The date was chosen because it coincides with the date on which the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) was established in 1970. This year’s topic is "Movies - A Global Passion".
We will be screening several documentary short films created by UCT Film and Media students on UCT innovations and their impact. Our film screenings are open to anyone who wishes to attend and there will be two opportunities to see the films. Films presented are:
- Reconstructing Smiles: a film about new techniques in reconstructive surgery
- Heart of Cape Town: a film about a successful community outreach programme
- Khusela: a film about a low cost fire alarm for informal settlements
- Elemental: a film about state-of-the-art concept design software
We will also be presenting educational talks on IP, aimed primarily at postgraduate students, although anyone is welcome to attend.
The first event (film screening followed by an IP talk) will be on Tuesday the 22nd of April at 11:00 until 12:30 at the Wolfson Pavilion (between Werner Beit North and South, UCT Health Sciences).
The second event (film screening followed by IP talk) will be on Wednesday the 23rd of April, 14:00 until 15:30 in the TB Davie Seminar Room (Postgraduate Funding Office, 3rd Floor, Otto Beit Building, UCT Upper Campus).
