Funding Opportunity: Marine Manufacturing Industry

26 Jan 2015 - 11:30

The Marine Industry Association of South Africa (MIASA) has been appointed by DST to administer a Marine Manufacturing Industry Innovation Fund (MMIIF). The fund is aimed to catalyse the boating industry in South Africa by providing much needed funds for research and innovation projects. A call for funding of innovation projects will officially be opened on the 26 Jan 2015 and the final date of submission will be on the 16 Feb 2015.

An application for funding from MMIIF needs to fall into one or more of the following sectors:

  • Manufacturing of vessels
  • Engines and systems
  • Marine equipment and accessories
  • Consumer goods and services
  • Business goods and services

The MMIIF fund has a total size of R15 000 000 over a three period and application over R1 000 000 will not be considered. Applications for funding should not be more than R500 000 – R750 000 and can typically span over a period of 1-3 years.

The fund has a fairly comprehensive set of criteria. The full list of criteria will be provided once the official call for funding opens, but the main points are provided below:

  • An application must consider a partnership between academic institution/science council and an industry partner
  • There must be Master and/or PhD students delivered on the innovation projects
  • If a publication or conference paper can be produced, it will greatly aid the application approval
  • A application needs to demonstrate the need in the market or a feasible commercialisation strategy for the innovation
  • All IP generated in the project will reside with academic institution (e.g. UCT) and post project negotiations can be done with the relevant people

As an attempt to assist with the process, the proposed application for funding should address all or as many of the following areas as possible:

  • Problems of cyclic demand in boating industry
  • Infrastructure problems in South Africa
  • Competitions vs. Collaboration
  • Labour costs vs. Productivity
  • Cash Flow Issues in the operations
  • Transformation in boating industry
  • Skills development
  • Lack of progress in the industry
  • Little interest in R&D in marine manufacturing industry
